A sore throat is irritation and pain in the throat that often worsens when you swallow. Most common cause of sore throat (pharyngitis) is a viral infection, such as a cold or the flu.
Strep throat (streptococcal infection), a less common type of sore throat caused by bacteria which requires treatment with antibiotics .
Other less common causes of sore throat may require more complex treatment modalities.
Most commonly caused by Viral Infection and less often bacterial infections cause sore throats.
Viral infections-
Bacterial infections-
The most common Organism causing sore throat is Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus) which causes strep throat apart from rare bacterial infections.
Other causes of a sore throat include-
Allergies – Allergens like molds , dust and pollen can cause a sore throat
Dryness - Dry air in the indoors can make your throat feel rough and scratchy
Irritants - Outdoor air pollution such as tobacco smoke or chemicals can cause a chronic sore throat.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) – reflex of gastric contents causing cough and sore throat.
Tumors- Tumors of the throat, tongue or larynx can also cause a sore throat.
Symptoms of a sore throat vary depending on the cause. Signs and symptoms might include:
Sorethroat associated with infection may also cause additional symptoms -
Your doctor may review the symptoms and your medical history. He or she may conduct a physical exam that examination of throat and neck and also assess for any recent infections .
Other additional tests if needed will include -
Throat swab & Culture -
The doctor gets a sample of secretions by rubbing a sterile swab over the back of the throat and sends the sample to a lab for testing. The test results will be available in 24-48 hrs.
Rapid antigen tests -
These tests aren't sensitive, although they can detect streptococcal bacteria quickly.
Molecular testing –
In some cases, Your surgeon may use a molecular test to detect streptococcal bacteria for accurate results but this test has still to be supported by medical studies.
Usually a sore throat secondary to viral infection lasts five to seven days and
doesn't usually require aggressive medical treatment.
Pain killers mayb be advised to ease pain and fever.
Treating bacterial infections-
If your sore throat is caused by any bacterial infection, your ENT surgeon will prescribe antibiotics.
You must take the full course of antibiotics as prescribed even if the symptoms are gone or else can lead to complications.
Rest - Get plenty of sleep.
Drink plenty of fluids - Fluids keep the throat moist and prevent dehydration and also avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can dehydrate you. Warm liquids , caffeine-free tea or warm water with honey can soothe a sore throat.
Gargle with saltwater. A saltwater gargle of 1/4 teaspoon of table salt with glass of warm water can help soothe a sore throat.
Consider lozenges or hard candy - can soothe a sore throat, but donot give them to children age less than 4 years because of choking risk.
Avoid irritants - Keep your home free from cigarette smoke and allergens that can irritate the throat.
Stay at home until you're no longer sick -This can help protect others from catching a cold or other virus as it spreads from 1 person to other.
A sore throat may start with a raspy feeling in your throat, as if your throat is dry. It may also feel like your throat is on fire. If your sore throat gets worse, you may feel a sharp pain in your throat when you swallow or talk. You may feel pain in your ears or down the side of your neck.
