Spine surgery is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that is performed to relieve a person from back pain because of any spinal problems diagnosed after evaluation by your orthopedician. Spine surgery is also called as Endoscopic Spine Surgery (ESS), Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS), and Arthroscopic Spine Surgery or discectomy or laminentomy(if disc bulge is the cause of back pain ). Post operative pain and recovery duration is lesser compared to traditional open spine surgery.
The following are the reasons for which an orthopedic surgeon may recommend spine surgery -
The doctor conducts a physical examination of the spine to assess the ascertain the causes of back pain and after the physical examination is done, some diagnostic tests are also recommended to get a clear image of the spinal abnormality. The following are diagnostic and supportive tests that are recommended-
Endoscopic spine surgery is advanced, minimally invasive spine surgery designed to provide best results with faster recovery time and less pain compared to any traditional spine surgery methods.
Almost all kinds of endoscopic spine surgeries(ESS) are performed using general anesthesia.. During endoscopic spine surgery, small incision is a made of approximately ¼ inch and using a spinal needle, a a guide wire is inserted through it. A metal dilator and a cannula are guided to the reach the spinal disc. The doctor removes the wire and the dilator once the surgical access to the disc is established. The doctor then targets and resects the bone spurs and the herniated disc with precision and with micro-instruments are used to decompress the affected spinal nerves.
After the surgery (Discectomy with or without laminenctomy), the surgeon injects a steroid in the spinal space to relieve the patient of post-operative pain. Post surgery, the patient is moved to the recovery area and monitored for a day.
